Rebuilt Friedenthal Lock to revive historic German waterway by 2026
Work has started on rebuilding the Friedenthal Lock in Oranienburg, nearly 70 years after the original structure was destroyed. The project, costing around €33 million, will reconnect the Oranienburger Havel with the Ruppin Lakes by late 2026. Officials say it will improve transport and tourism in the region.
The first Friedenthal Lock was badly damaged during the war and closed in 1959. The site was later filled in, blocking access to the Ruppin Canal. Discussions about rebuilding it began nearly 30 years ago, with federal authorities formally agreeing to the project in 2017.
Once completed in November 2026, the lock will restore a key waterway link. Boats will again travel between the Oranienburger Havel and the Ruppin Lakes, supporting local transport and tourism. The project marks the end of decades of planning and delays.
