Brussels Airport Aviation Awards 2021: High Flyers With Heart
Aviation’s heavy hitters gathered once again at the Brussels Airport Sheraton Hotel on April 27, 2021. The annual Brussels Airport Aviation Awards returned, honoring airlines and partners for their exceptional achievements in the areas of punctuality and performance, network development, and safety and environment. Twelve awards were presented during a live partner event.
The Brussels Airport Aviation Awards, originally established in October 2007, aim to recognize the crème de la crème of the industry - those who excel in the midst of challenges and carrier traffic. In 2021, following the impact of the Covid-19 crisis, an adapted edition emphasizing cargo Awards was held, with a full schedule of Awards returning in the year to follow.
Dazzling Departures and Timely Arrivals
The Performance and Punctuality Awards celebrate passenger and cargo airlines with outstanding performances in punctuality and workforce efficiency. For passenger airlines, punctuality refers to an arrival or departure within 15 minutes of the scheduled time. Cargo performance is calculated using factors like the number of weekly flights, cargo per flight, and the growth in cargo tonnage.
1. Cargo Airline Performance Award: Qatar Airways Cargo
Qatar Airways Cargo has consistently contributed to the growth of Brucargo, making them top contenders for this award for the third year running. Currently operating 11 scheduled weekly flights between Brussels and Doha, their exceptional performance has stood out among Ethiopian Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, and Singapore Airlines Cargo.
2. Short Haul Airline Punctuality Award: Aer Lingus
In the Punctuality Awards, Brussels Airport evaluates on-time performance over the last six months of the previous year to better reflect traffic recovery. Aer Lingus took this award home in 2021 with a remarkable on-time performance of 93.5%. Air Europa, Eurowings, airBaltic, and Croatia Airlines were also nominated.
3. Long Haul Airline Punctuality Award: Emirates
Emirates secured the Punctuality Award for long-haul airlines with an impressive on-time performance of 88.6% in 2021. ANA, Qatar Airways, Etihad, and Ethiopian Airlines were the other nominees.
The Cargo Kings of Brussels
Besides passenger airlines, the Brussels Airport Aviation Awards also acknowledge the efforts of cargo stakeholders and partners within the Brussels Airport area.
1. Brucargo Award: dnata
The Brucargo Award is given out to honor partners in the Brucargo area since 2012. This year, dnata took home the award for their significant contributions to innovation projects and being a stable and trusted handling partner for Qatar Airways. ACIC Operator, Aviapartner Cargo, Customs Brucargo, Flanders Investment & Trade, and Swissport Cargo were other nominees.
2. Logistic Provider Award: DSV
DSV earned the Logistic Provider Award for their focus on perishables and live animals transport excellence, in addition to their growth in freight services at Brussels Airport. Commendable additions to their services included additional charter flights and contributions to the development of rapid pharmaceutical and perishable transport processes. DHL Global Forwarding, Hongyuan Group, and Ziegler were also recognized in this category.
Green Thumbs and Safety First
The Environment and Safety Awards are given to airlines or partners with significant contributions to the environment and improved safety standards.
1. Environment Award: DHL Aviation
DHL Aviation took home this award for their strong commitment to minimizing carbon footprints through investments in electric airside transport and the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels. They also boast a defined sustainability strategy that addresses issues like climate change, gender equality, diversity, and further strengthening of cooperation with stakeholders.
2. Safety Award: Gate Gourmet
Gate Gourmet garnered the Safety Award due to their exceptional proactive attitude and collaborative safety practices, efficient communication, and commitment to following up on actions. Their exceptional safety performance was recognized among other nominees.
Trailblazers in Network Development
The Network Development Awards recognize airlines for launching new routes or achieving substantial growth in passenger or cargo volumes.
1. Cargo Airline Award: DHL Aviation
DHL Aviation earned this award for their high-volume growth in 2021 and the addition of North American routes to bolster their brussoir operation. DHL Aviation also demonstrated a commitment to sustainable aviation by joining the Brussels Airport Stargate project.
2. Cargo Special Achievement Award: All Nippon Airways
In 2020, All Nippon Airways was integral in the successful distribution of Covid-19 vaccines from Brussels Airport, earning this award for their exceptional dedication.
3. Short Haul Airline Network Development Award: Royal Air Maroc & Turkish Airlines
Recognized for their substantial contributions to connecting the Belgian Moroccan and Turkish communities during the pandemic, Royal Air Maroc and Turkish Airlines shared the Short Haul Airline Network Development Award. Brussels Airport acknowledged the importance of reconnecting friends and families amid lockdowns and travel restrictions.
4. Long Haul Airline Network Development Award: Brussels Airlines
Brussels Airlines was honored for their successful recovery of Africa's traffic during the Covid crisis and their role as a significant component in the Lufthansa Group network.
