The city of Halle (Saale) has announced that it will begin the reconstruction of six bridges on the Magistrale, starting from August 22, 2025, and lasting until 2027. The project, funded by the state of Saxony-Anhalt, aims to address cracks and concrete cancer found on these bridges.
The bridge over Damaschkeplatz in Magdeburg, which was closed for repairs since last year, has reopened to traffic as of Friday afternoon. In contrast, the first bridge demolition at the Rennbahn crossing in Halle is scheduled to begin in early September.
The city administration plans to manage the construction work with two lanes of traffic to minimize disruptions. The construction costs for the project are estimated to be around 11 million euros, with the funds coming from the Financial Equalization Law for the maintenance of federal highways.
The problems with dilapidated bridges and other buildings are not solely due to the steel used during DDR times, particularly from Hennigsdorf. It is worth noting that the same reinforcement steel used on the Carolabridge in Dresden was also used on the bridges of the Magistrale.
The renovation of Halle's elevated road, including the planning, is likely to begin in July. Trams are expected to be able to pass under the bridge in Magdeburg again in September, and the bridge over Federal Highway 80 is not expected to require a full closure.
The Lantern Festival will take place before the first bridge demolition, providing an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate before the construction begins. Construction work on six bridges on the Magistrale in Halle will commence on August 25, 2025.
