Record 63% surge in social security benefit cuts hits 369,200 recipients in 2024
In 2024, a significant increase in performance reductions was observed, impacting around 369,200 employable benefit recipients. This figure represents a 63.4% rise compared to the previous year, with missed appointments being the primary reason.
On average, approximately 27,400 people were affected each month by these reductions. By the end of 2024, only 0.8% of employable benefit recipients had experienced at least one performance reduction.
The average reduction was 7.8% of the benefit, amounting to around 62 euros. Deliberately not taking up a reasonable job after a performance reduction can result in a full reduction of the basic benefit.
Performance reductions can be reversed if recipients resume their obligations or commit to doing so. The majority, around 86.3%, of these reductions were due to missed appointments, totaling approximately 318,700 cases.
The year 2024 saw a substantial increase in performance reductions, with missed appointments being the primary cause. While the overall impact on benefit recipients was relatively low, the increase in reductions highlights the need for continued support and engagement to ensure recipients meet their obligations.
