Remote Komi village celebrates opening of a new Orthodox church backed by Lukoil
A new Orthodox church, the Church of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia, has opened in Novikboi, a remote settlement in the Komi Republic. The news of the church's opening marks a significant moment for the local community and its spiritual life. The church's construction received major backing from Lukoil, which has long supported religious and cultural projects in the region. Since 2010, the company has funded multiple church restorations, including the St. Nicholas Cathedral in 2018, and plans further work on smaller chapels until 2025. Archbishop Mark of Vorkuta and Usinsk led the consecration ceremony, emphasizing the church's role in preserving Komi's cultural heritage and serving as a beacon of faith for future generations. The building features a richly decorated interior, a large altar, and dedicated spaces for baptisms and memorial services. A separate refectory and utility rooms were also constructed. Hieromonk Peter (Krasnikov) has been named the church's rector. Due to its remote location, services will follow a special schedule. Local parishioners played an active part in preparing the church and expressed joy at its completion. For many, the new building serves not only as a place of worship but also as a community hub. Lukoil's involvement extends beyond funding, aiming to strengthen cultural ties and foster unity in the northern territories. Residents see the church as a vital centre for shared activities and mutual support. The opening of the church brings a new spiritual focus to Novikboi and nearby settlements. With ongoing restorations planned, Lukoil's commitment continues to shape the region's cultural and religious landscape. The building now stands as a gathering place for worship and community life.
