Berlin General Renovation Project: Work taking place at around 20 different locations in Berlin to Hamburg - Renovation work in Hamburg-Berlin creating approximately 20 job opportunities
Hamburg–Berlin Railway Line Undergoes Major Nine-Month Renovation
The Hamburg–Berlin railway line, a crucial high-speed rail connection, is currently undergoing a significant nine-month renovation, with the closure expected to last until the end of April 2026 [1][2]. This comprehensive upgrade, taking place in Brandenburg's Falkensee and other regions, aims to modernize the entire 270-kilometre corridor, serving approximately 30,000 passengers daily [1][5].
The renovation, led by project leader Julian Fassing, involves extensive work on existing infrastructure. Approximately 20 sites are currently undergoing work in parallel, with the first new switches and signal boxes already installed [5]. While the stability of bridges and the radii of curves were not mentioned as issues being addressed in the current renovation, the modernization targets improved infrastructure for speed, capacity, and reliability within this vital national corridor [1][5].
Due to the scale and complexity of the work, the line has been closed to train traffic. During the closure, the direct rail service between Hamburg and Berlin is severely disrupted. ICE long-distance trains run limited services—at most one express ICE train per hour—with journeys extended by about 45 minutes due to rerouting and slowdowns [2][3]. Ersatz (replacement) bus services operate to cover parts of the route, accommodating passenger needs amid the disruption [5].
The renovation is part of a broader federal initiative to modernize Germany’s primary railway corridors by the mid-2030s [1][4]. The track and the overhead lines would have had to be adapted to allow for higher speeds, but this was not mentioned as part of the current renovation. Long-distance traffic is being rerouted via Stendal and Uelzen during the renovation.
The ground along the construction site is regularly checked for unexploded ordnance, but none have been found yet. Occasionally, unknown cables are encountered during the work, but no major issues have been reported so far in the renovation process. The scheduled completion date for the general renovation of the Hamburg-Berlin railway line is the end of April [6].
In Buchen, a train derailed during the work, but there were no other incidents. An extensive replacement concept for regional traffic, including buses, has been implemented to ensure smooth transportation during the renovation period.
