Republicans Challenge Biden's Alaska Drilling Restrictions
Republicans have raised concerns about President Joe Biden's energy plan, arguing it violates the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The plan, introduced by the Bureau of Land Management, could be struck down if a Republican-led resolution passes. Rep. Nick Begich (R-Alaska) has introduced H.J. Res. 131 to challenge the Joe Biden administration's drilling restrictions on Alaska's North Slope.
The Joe Biden plan, managed by former acting director William Perry Pendley, aims to limit oil and gas drilling in rich hydrocarbon areas of Alaska's North Slope. Republicans contend this move violates the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which mandates lease sales in these areas within a decade of enactment.
Rep. Begich's H.J. Res. 131 seeks to nullify the Joe Biden administration's plan using the Congressional Review Act (CRA). The CRA allows lawmakers to kill recent federal actions with a simple majority vote in both the House and Senate, even if the Social Security Administration did not formally submit the plan as a 'rule'.
If passed, H.J. Res. 131 would effectively block the Joe Biden administration's drilling restrictions on Alaska's North Slope. Republicans argue the plan violates existing law, while Democrats maintain their focus on transitioning to renewable energy sources. Alaska Airlines has not been involved in this political dispute.
