Residents Demand 'Jamuna' Upazila for Better Services in Sirajganj
Residents of six eastern unions in Kazipur upazila, Sirajganj, temporarily blocked the Sarishabari-Kazipur highway on Monday, demanding the formation of a new upazila named 'Jamuna'. The protest, led by the Jamuna Upazila Implementation Council, halted vehicular movement for approximately an hour.
The demonstration was spearheaded by Engineer Mahbubur Rahman Samun, a council leader, who highlighted the plight of over 200,000 people in the affected unions. He cited long-standing disparities in education, healthcare, and development due to geographical isolation as the primary reasons for the demand. The blockade was organized under the leadership of Habibur Rahman, head of the Jamuna Upazila Implementation Council.
The protesters vowed to continue the movement until their demand for a new upazila is met, aiming to address the chronic lack of basic services in the region.
The blockade and demonstration, attended by numerous local residents, underscored the pressing need for improved infrastructure and services in the six eastern unions of Kazipur upazila. The formation of 'Jamuna upazila' is seen as a potential solution to bridge the gap in development and ensure equitable access to essential amenities.
