Resurfaced Video Shows Late Asantehene Resolving Chief Selection Dispute
An old video of the late Asantehene, Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, has resurfaced online, showing him arbitrating a dispute over the selection of a chief in the 1980s. The matter was recently brought before the Asante Traditional Court, where a group challenged the selection of a young man as chief.
The aggrieved group appeared before the late king, represented by Nana Kofi Obiri Egyir, to voice their concerns. The issue was the selection of a young man as chief, which an elder had challenged. Each member of the group was individually questioned about their grievances. The new chief, despite the challenge, went ahead and swore his allegiance to Otumfuo Opoku Ware II. The matter was resolved, and the parties were encouraged to make peace, symbolically shaking hands. To signify victory and a favorable outcome, the young chief was later smeared with a white powdery substance, a traditional symbol of triumph.
The resurfaced video serves as a reminder of the late king's role in resolving disputes and maintaining peace within the Asante kingdom. The recent case, though different in time, echoes the same tradition of open dialogue and resolution.
