Rettenberg's 2026 Mayoral Election Kicks Off with High Stakes on March 8
Rettenberg will hold its mayoral election on March 8, 2026, with polls open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Voters will choose a successor to Nikolaus Weißinger, who won the 2020 election with a landslide 86.7 percent of the vote. The results will be shown in a live graphic once counting is complete.
The 2026 race follows a period of leadership changes in Rettenberg. Oliver Kunz of the CSU served as mayor from 2008 to 2020 but did not run again. His successor, Nikolaus Weißinger, also from the CSU, secured a decisive victory in the last election.
To win outright, a candidate must receive over 50 percent of the vote. If no one reaches this threshold, a runoff will take place on March 22. The town council election results will be published separately once confirmed.
In the 2020 town council vote, the Free Voters' Association Rettenberg led with 28.5 percent. The CSU followed with 21 percent, while the Green Party secured 16.4 percent. Two other local groups, Free Voters' Group Rettenberg-Untermaiselstein and Free Voters Rettenberg-Vorderburg, gained 21.9 percent and 12.2 percent respectively.
The election will determine Rettenberg's next mayor and shape the town council's composition. Official results for both races will be released after verification. A runoff, if needed, is scheduled for two weeks later.
