Schweitzer to ease the burden on school textbooks and driving licenses - Rhineland-Palatinate SPD vows free school materials if re-elected on 22 March
The SPD in Rhineland-Palatinate has revealed its election promises ahead of the 22 March state election. Party leader Alexander Schweitzer, who is running for a second term as minister-president, has pledged to abolish all schoolbook and learning material costs if re-elected. The move would represent a significant shift in education funding, with the state covering expenses for digital licences, textbooks, and workbooks.
Schweitzer’s primary election promise centers around education. If his party wins the election, all school-related costs—including digital licences, teaching materials, and workbooks—would be eliminated. The initiative is projected to cost hundreds of millions in its first year alone.
The SPD’s election promises include free school materials and enhanced transport services. If successful, the changes would take effect following the 22 March election. The party’s candidate list, showcasing a near-equal gender balance, is now finalized for the upcoming campaign.
