Is enough being done to maintain the bridges? - Rhineland-Palatinate's 5,800 Bridges Face 410M Euro Maintenance Backlog

The State Mobility Authority (LBM) in Rhineland-Palatinate manages approximately 5,800 bridges on federal, state, and district roads. The opposition is pushing for more efforts to maintain these vital structures, with a significant maintenance backlog of around 410 million euros.

Each bridge undergoes regular inspections, with modern technology and simple visual checks alternating every three years. Around 88 percent of the bridges are in a satisfactory condition or better, rated on a scale of 1.0 (very good) to 4.0 (unsatisfactory).

The Minister of Transport Daniela Schmitt (FDP) defends the current efforts, stating that 'a lot is happening' to maintain the bridge stock. However, opposition MPs like Eugen Ziegler (AfD) and Stephan Wefelscheid (Free Voters) call for a more proactive maintenance strategy and increased funding. The 2025/26 state road construction program allocates around 27 million euros for 94 bridge maintenance and renewal projects.

The LBM's task of maintaining 5,800 bridges faces a substantial backlog of 410 million euros. While the majority of bridges are in good condition, the opposition urges more commitment and resources to ensure the safety and longevity of these critical structures.
