Eder: Revitalizing Train Stations' Anxiety Spaces - Rhineland-Palatinate's Transport Minister Blames Train Station Decline on Privatization
Rhineland-Palatinate's Transport Minister, Katrin Eder, has blamed the decline in safety and vibrancy of train stations on the privatization of Deutsche Bahn. She has proposed investing in cleanliness, lighting, and free restrooms, while also supporting municipalities to repurpose vacant train station buildings.
Eder criticized Friedrich Merz's approach of scapegoating, instead calling for increased funding for train station improvements. She noted that only one-third of the 154 train station buildings in Rhineland-Palatinate remain under the control of Deutsche Bahn or local authorities, with the majority now privately owned. Despite this, Eder has secured an agreement with Deutsche Bahn to invest over €580 million in train station modernization over the next decade, with a focus on rural areas.
Eder's proposals aim to enhance the safety and appeal of train stations in Rhineland-Palatinate. The significant investment, focusing on rural areas, is expected to improve the overall quality and accessibility of the region's train stations.
