Rigathi Gachagua's political comeback tests Kenya's opposition unity

Former Kenyan Vice President Rigathi Gachagua has re-emerged as a key figure in opposition politics. After his removal from office in 2024, he faced legal battles and political sidelining. Now, his shared background with President William Ruto could shape the race for the United Opposition's presidential nomination.

Gachagua served as Kenya's deputy president under Ruto from September 2022 until October 2024. His impeachment and subsequent removal marked a sharp turn in his political career. Since then, he has openly criticised the Ruto administration while navigating legal challenges and uncertain prospects.

What sets Gachagua apart is a rare trait he shares with the president. This common ground may now work in his favour as opposition parties search for a candidate to challenge Ruto in the next election. His experience in government and vocal stance against the current leadership have kept him in the public eye. By early 2026, his political future remained unclear. Yet, his alignment with opposition forces and the unique connection to Ruto could position him as a strong contender for the United Opposition's nomination.

Gachagua's impeachment and removal from office once seemed to end his political influence. However, his shared background with Ruto and growing opposition support have revived his chances. The coming months will reveal whether this advantage secures him the nomination—or reshapes Kenya's political landscape.
