Riversdale Beach Residents Demand Action After Holiday Antisocial Behavior
Residents of Riversdale Beach have expressed concern over antisocial behavior during the recent holiday weekend, leading the Masterton District Council to review its alcohol bylaw policy. A meeting is scheduled for Wednesday to discuss potential changes.
Over the holiday weekend, locals reported property destruction and felt unsafe due to bad behavior from a small group of drunk teenagers. Police responded to a call about a group of young people breaching the peace and found those involved had caused disturbances, destroyed signs, harassed pedestrians, and rode motorbikes without helmets. The Masterton District Council is now reviewing its alcohol bylaw policy, with a report recommending a targeted public consultation from November 3 to 17. One option being considered is permanent alcohol bans on major holidays at some beaches. However, Pip Hannon, owner of the Riversdale Beach Store, doubts that a permanent alcohol ban would solve the problem without a permanent police presence. The permanent population of Riversdale Beach is about 180, but it significantly increases during holidays.
