Roland Helle takes helm of Mycare after leadership transition

Roland Helle has taken over ownership of Mycare, a Wittenberg-based pharmacy group, following the death of its previous owner, Christian Buse, a year ago. The transition marks a new chapter for the business, which includes multiple local pharmacies and operates under the Robert Koch Pharmacy name.

Helle brings extensive experience in the sector, having previously worked in leadership roles at Mycare itself, as well as at other major pharmacy and healthcare firms.

Helle first joined Mycare in 2009, where he led the pharmaceutical department until 2013. After leaving, he took on senior positions elsewhere, including chief pharmacist at Aponeo and managing director of the wholesaler Atida Plus. His career also included a stint at Gematik, where he contributed to key digital health projects like the e-prescription system, electronic medication plans, and the electronic patient record (ePA).

The pharmacy group now under his ownership includes the Galenos Pharmacy at the Kaufland Center and the Kreisel Pharmacy in Wittenberg's health center. Both locations operate under the umbrella of Robert Koch Pharmacy, which manages Mycare's services.

Following Christian Buse's death, his widow, Yvonne Buse, initially took charge of the pharmacy and joined the executive board of the homecare division. Christine Buse, Yvonne's mother-in-law, also stepped in to support the management during the transition.

Recently, Helle highlighted financial challenges tied to new regulations in the Pharmacy Operations Ordinance (ApBetrO). The updated rules demand specially certified packaging, electronic temperature loggers, and full documentation for medication shipments. These changes, he warned, could lead to significantly higher operational costs for pharmacies.

The broader pharmacy market has seen consolidation in recent years. In 2022, the Markol Group expanded its digital footprint by acquiring Atida Plus, reinforcing its position with a mix of online pharmacy platforms and healthcare technology services. While details on further acquisitions remain limited, the sector continues to evolve with stricter compliance demands and growing digital integration.

With Helle now at the helm, Mycare enters a period of change, balancing regulatory pressures with the need for operational efficiency. The pharmacy group's future will depend on adapting to stricter shipment rules while maintaining its local presence in Wittenberg.

The shift in ownership follows a year of internal adjustments, as the Buse family temporarily managed operations after Christian Buse's passing. Helle's background in pharmacy leadership and digital health may help steer the business through the evolving industry landscape.
