RTL denies layoffs are tied to Stefan Raab’s costly but underperforming shows
RTL has denied any connection between recent employee layoffs and the high expenses for Stefan Raab’s shows. The denial comes amidst speculation that weak ad revenue from Raab's programs has led to job cuts or unrenewed contracts, as suggested by YouTuber Klengan.
RTL has expressed satisfaction with Raab's work, citing strong audience resonance and emotional impact across various platforms. The media company had high hopes for Raab's shows, with RTL+ intended to play a central role in RTL's strategy to boost streaming services. Raab's first show, 'You Won’t Win the Million Here', initially drew new subscribers but ratings dipped after it moved to linear TV. RTL eventually canceled the show due to unsatisfactory ratings, particularly among younger viewers.
RTL guaranteed Raab's production company a minimum of €90 million in production volume for his shows. However, Raab's second show, 'The Stefan Raab Show', has at times drawn fewer viewers than its predecessor. Inga Leschek, RTL Germany's Chief Content Officer, had predicted Raab's return would attract subscribers to RTL's streaming platform, RTL+.
An RTL employee, speaking anonymously, expressed internal unrest due to massive cost-cutting measures alongside substantial payments to Stefan Raab, despite poor ratings. However, RTL officially denies any direct link between layoffs and the high costs of Raab's shows. Another RTL employee confirmed internal dissatisfaction with the high costs associated with Raab's shows and their poor ratings.
