Rubio urges unity to strengthen US-Europe alliance in Munich speech

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called for a stronger partnership between America and Europe. Speaking in Munich, he stressed the need to 'revitalise' the transatlantic alliance rather than create divisions. His remarks aimed to reassure European allies of Washington’s ongoing commitment.

Rubio’s speech stood in sharp contrast to last year’s address at the same conference. Then, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance had issued a stark warning about 'civilizational erasure,' sparking concern among European leaders. This time, the tone shifted toward unity and shared purpose.

The secretary framed the alliance as essential to preserving Western values. He described America’s goal as 'renewing the greatest civilisation in human history' through closer ties with Europe. His words sought to ease doubts about U.S. dedication to the partnership.

Rubio’s message comes as relations between the U.S. and Europe face ongoing challenges. By emphasising cooperation, he signalled a desire to move past recent tensions. The focus now turns to how both sides will act on his call for a reinvigorated alliance.
