RUCSU Elections 2025: 28,901 Students Vote After 35-Year Gap

Voting for the Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU) elections began today at 9:00am, with a total of 28,901 students expected to cast their votes. The polls are being held after a gap of 35 years, with the last RUCSU elections taking place in 1990. A large number of law enforcement personnel have been deployed to ensure security.

Students arrived at polling centres in high spirits, eager to exercise their voting rights. Inside the centres, teachers and volunteers guided voters through the process, requiring them to show their university ID card or other valid identification before entering the booths. Nine panels backed by various student organisations are taking part in the polls. A total of 247 candidates are contesting 23 RUCSU posts, 597 candidates are vying in 17 residential hall union elections, and 58 candidates are competing for five Senate representative positions.

Imtiaz Hossain, a fresher from the Islamic Studies department, expressed hope that the polls would end peacefully with cooperation from all parties. Nazmul Hassan, additional police commissioner (crime) of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, said about 2,300 police personnel, six platoons of BGB, and twelve platoons of RAB had been deployed to maintain order.

The RUCSU elections are being held after a long gap and are expected to have a significant impact on student politics in Bangladesh. With a large number of candidates contesting various positions, the polls are seen as an opportunity for students to voice their concerns and choose representatives who will work for their interests.
