RUCSU Elections See Record Turnout, Shibir Wins Key Posts After 35 Years

Rajshahi University Central Hall Unions' (RUCSU) elections saw a significant turnout of 69.83%, with 20,187 out of 28,909 registered voters casting their ballots. The elections, held after a 35-year gap, saw intense competition for various posts.

In the race for assistant general secretary, Jahin Biswas Esha of Jatiya Chhatra Dal (JCD) received 5,941 votes, closely followed by his nearest contestant. However, it was Salman Sabbir of Islami Chhatra Shibir (Shibir) who secured the post with a substantial 6,971 votes.

The vice-president post was also hotly contested. Sheikh Nur Uddin Abir of JCD received 3,397 votes, but it was Mostakur Rahman Jahid of Shibir who emerged victorious with 12,687 votes. The general secretary post saw Nafiul Islam Jibon of JCD receive 1,328 votes, while Salahuddin Ammar of Adhipatyabirodhi Oikya secured the position with 11,537 votes. Fazle Rabbi Md Fahim Reza of Shibir got 5,729 votes for general secretary, his nearest contestant.

The elections saw Shibir-backed candidates winning key posts in RUCSU after a 35-year gap. A total of 247 candidates contested for 23 RUCSU posts, and another 597 for 17 residential hall union elections. Despite the lack of specific information about the candidates for the president post, the elections have brought significant changes to the university's central hall unions.
