Russia commences construction of aviation hangars on its military compounds.
Aircraft Shelters on the rise: A defensive measure amidst hostilities
In response to recent drone attacks, Russia has kicked off the construction of aircraft shelters on its military bases — as seen in satellite imagery. This development, reported by Radio Liberty, represents a significant defensive move to protect Russian aircraft from potential future attacks.
Traces of construction work for these shelters can be spotted on satellite images of airfields not only in occupied Crimea, including Kirovske, Sevastopol, Gvardieske, and Saki, but also in several Russian cities like Yeysk, Krymsk, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, and strategically important bases such as the "Khan" airbase in Adygea, Millerovo, Akhtubinsk, Borisoglebsk, Kursk, Lipetsk, and Engels.1
Similar construction sites are also being established in Ukrainian territory, serving as a response to the massive drone strike on Russian strategic aviation airfields that occurred on June 1, 2024. Russian airfields like "Olenya," "Belaya," "Dyagilevo," and "Ivanovo" were targeted, resulting in the destruction of 41 Russian aircraft, including A-50, Tu-95, and Tu-22M3.2
This initiative to construct aircraft shelters began in the fall of 2024 and is part of a broader strategy to enhance the security and survivability of Russian air assets amidst ongoing hostilities.3
