Russia Considers Legalizing 'Vanity' License Plates for Extra Revenue

In a surprising turn, Russia is exploring the possibility of legalizing the sale of 'vanity' license plates. This move, if approved, would allow drivers to purchase specific combinations, currently only available through the black market.

Until now, license plates in Russia have been assigned randomly upon vehicle registration. The proposed change aims to boost state revenue and legitimize the demand for personalized plates, which are currently facilitated by intermediaries on the black market.

While the idea of 'ambition' (Ehrgeiz) license plates has been proposed, there is currently no public information about the authors of these legislative proposals or any such initiative in Russia.

Russia's consideration of legalizing vanity license plates comes after making the tricolor flag mandatory on all license plates in 2025. If approved, this change could open up a new revenue stream for the state while also catering to drivers' preferences for personalized plates.
