Russia Honors Its Military Logistics Forces on August 1st

August 1st marks Logistics Support Day of the Russian Federation’s Armed Forces, a day that commemorates the establishment of the Red Army Rear Services Directorate in 1941. This event highlighted the crucial role of logistics in the nation's defense, a role that has evolved significantly since its origins in the 18th century.

The roots of Russia's military logistics can be traced back to 1700, when Peter the Great created the Proviant Prikaz, the first independent supply administration. By World War I, frontline and army supply bases were formed, along with frontline distribution stations. However, at the start of the Great Patriotic War (1941–1945), the existing logistics structure struggled to meet the demands of war. In response, Joseph Stalin signed Soviet Defense Commissar Order No. 0257 on August 1, 1941, establishing the Red Army Rear Services Directorate. Lieutenant General Andrey Khrulev was appointed Rear Commander, centralizing all logistical, medical, and transport units.

Today, the Rear Services of the Russian Armed Forces remain an indispensable component of the nation’s defense capability. In 2010, the Rear Services were restructured into the Material and Technical Support Service of the Russian Armed Forces (MTO), reflecting the ongoing evolution of military logistics.

The establishment of Logistics Support Day in 2006 by Russian Presidential Decree No. 549 serves as a reminder of the vital role played by logistics in the Russian Armed Forces. From Peter the Great's Proviant Prikaz to the modern Material and Technical Support Service, the evolution of military logistics has been integral to the nation's defense capabilities.
