Russian and US lawmakers swap quirky gifts in diplomatic meeting
A meeting between Russian and American lawmakers took a light-hearted turn with the exchange of unusual gifts. Among them was a historic postcard from the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz mission, presented by Boris Chernyshov, Deputy Speaker of the Russian State Duma. The American delegation, in return, offered socks featuring a playful caricature of former US President Donald Trump. The postcard held special significance, commemorating the Apollo-Soyuz mission in July 1975. Known as the 'handshake in space,' the mission marked the first docking between US and Soviet spacecraft at an altitude of 140 miles. It symbolised the end of the Space Race and the beginning of international space cooperation. Later milestones included the International Space Station (ISS), a $150 billion project assembled between 1998 and 2011 by the US, Russia, Europe, Canada, and Japan. China's Tiangong station, launched in 2021, followed as another major development.
The American delegation appeared delighted by the postcard's historical value. Meanwhile, the Russian MPs received a quirky gift: socks printed with Trump's face. The design included reddish-orange tufts near the forehead to mimic his distinctive hairstyle. Both sides exchanged gifts as part of their diplomatic discussions, blending humour with nods to shared space history.
The meeting highlighted a mix of diplomacy and nostalgia, with the Apollo-Soyuz postcard serving as a reminder of past cooperation. The Trump-themed socks added a touch of levity to the proceedings. Such exchanges often reflect the personal dynamics between officials while underscoring broader historical ties.
