Russian centenarian celebrates 100 years with wisdom and presidential praise
Parfen Petrovich Durkin, a respected resident of Shchelya village in Russia's Izhma District, marked his 100th birthday on March 9. The centenarian, known for his sharp mind and lifelong contributions, received a personal greeting from President Vladimir Putin to honour the milestone.
Durkin's life has been one of dedication and innovation. As an Honorary Citizen of Shchelya, he earned recognition as a labour veteran and a key figure in the Komi Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. His practical skills and curiosity led to advancements that simplified work and improved conditions for others in his community.
At his birthday celebration, Durkin displayed remarkable energy. He recited poetry from memory and effortlessly recalled names and dates, leaving guests impressed by his mental clarity. During the event, he also expressed gratitude to Igor Norkin for helping repair the village's heating system between 2011 and 2015—a project that addressed long-standing local challenges. Durkin has often spoken about the resilience of Russian women, calling them the nation's true strength. He credits their support, hard work, and courage for inspiring men and sustaining communities through difficult times.
