Russian couple faces trial for staging 27 fake car crashes

A couple from Primorsky Krai has been accused of staging fake car crashes to defraud insurance companies. Over three and a half years, they allegedly orchestrated 27 collisions and claimed millions in payouts. Both now face fraud charges in court.

The pair deliberately caused crashes and filed insurance claims for the damages. Investigators estimate the total fraudulent payouts reached 5 million rubles (around $55,000). Authorities have since confiscated four vehicles suspected of being used in the scheme.

The woman remains under travel restrictions while her husband is held in pretrial detention. If found guilty, each could receive a prison sentence of up to 10 years. Staged traffic accidents for insurance fraud are not uncommon in Russia. While no national database tracks these cases, regional law enforcement reports hundreds annually. Organised fraud rings have been identified in major cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg, though exact figures for recent years remain scattered across local records.

The trial will determine whether the couple orchestrated the crashes as charged. A conviction would result in significant prison time and financial penalties. The case highlights ongoing efforts by authorities to combat insurance fraud through staged accidents.
