Russian Doctor Accused of Stealing Narcotics During Clinical Rotation
A resident physician at Far Eastern Federal University's School of Medicine and Life Sciences faces criminal charges for allegedly stealing narcotic drugs. The incident took place in July 2025 at the university's Medical Complex in Vladivostok. Authorities have seized the accused's assets and vehicle as part of the investigation.
The physician, who was completing a clinical rotation in the Department of Anesthesiology, Resuscitation, and Intensive Care, is suspected of tampering with medical supplies. Investigators claim the resident replaced a syringe containing a narcotic anaesthetic with one filled with sodium chloride solution for personal use.
The FSB's Primorsky Krai directorate has formally charged the individual with theft of narcotic substances. As a precautionary measure, assets and a vehicle worth over 600,000 rubles have been confiscated.
This case follows a broader trend in Russia. Between 2021 and 2025, around 150 to 200 doctors were prosecuted for similar offences, according to reports from the Russian Interior Ministry and judicial statistics. The highest number of cases occurred in 2023, with nearly 50 incidents recorded in regions such as Moscow and St. Petersburg.
The resident now faces legal proceedings over the alleged theft. If convicted, the case would add to the growing number of medical professionals prosecuted for narcotics-related offences in recent years. The university and authorities have not yet released further details on the ongoing investigation.
