Russian drone attacks cause damage to defence industry centers throughout Ukraine
In a series of strategic attacks, Ukrainian drone strikes have targeted key Russian enterprises and facilities across various regions, causing significant disruptions to the country's military, economic, and civilian sectors.
The latest reports indicate that these strikes have primarily focused on oil refineries and defense industry facilities. One of the most affected regions is the Volgograd Oblast, home to the second-largest Lukoil refinery, which has been struck multiple times, causing fires and halting operations.
The Saratov Oil Refinery, a key fuel infrastructure supporting Russian occupation forces, has also suffered explosions and fire following a drone raid, resulting in the suspension of crude intake post-attack. The Novokuibyshevsk and Samara Refineries in the Samara Region, as well as the Ryazan Refinery in the Ryazan Region, have also been affected, with significant operational disruptions.
The impact of these strikes extends beyond the oil industry. The Arzamas Instrument-Making Plant in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, a defense industry company producing optical, electronic, navigation systems for Russian military vehicles, aircraft, and missiles, has also been targeted. An employee was killed, and two others were injured in the attack.
The region of Tula, approximately 370 kilometres from the Russia-Ukraine border, has also been affected. A civilian enterprise in the region was struck, resulting in the death of two people and the injury of three.
These drone strikes have contributed to an estimated 13-15% effective reduction in Russia’s oil refining capacity, with four major refineries having ceased or suspended operations in August 2025. The strikes not only target oil infrastructure crucial for Russia’s military and economic capabilities but also defense industry enterprises producing military equipment.
The drones used in these attacks are a mix of domestically produced and commercially modified UAVs, coordinated to penetrate Russian air defense systems. The Russian Defense Ministry has reported shooting down over 30 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions, including Nizhny Novgorod, Belgorod, Bryansk, Kaluga, Orel, Kursk, Voronezh, Tula and Ryazan regions, as well as annexed Crimea.
In a separate incident, Russia's flag carrier Aeroflot canceled flights after a pro-Ukrainian group allegedly hacked its systems.
The Kremlin is now allowing foreigners to serve in the Russian army in an attempt to avoid mobilization. This strategic campaign by Ukraine aims to disrupt Russia’s war effort and economy.
