Russian Envoy Slams North Macedonia's Stance on Ukraine War as 'Self-Harming'
Russia’s ambassador to North Macedonia, Dmitry Zykov, has criticised the country’s stance on the Moscow-Kyiv conflict. He claims recent anti-Russian measures do not benefit its citizens. The diplomat also expressed disappointment with Skopje’s position since his arrival in late December 2025. Since 2022, North Macedonia has significantly reduced engagement with Russian diplomats. Most officials, including those in the Foreign Ministry, now avoid direct contact. Despite this, the government maintains basic working relations with the Russian mission to address specific issues.
Ambassador Zykov has met with President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova and Foreign Minister Timcho Mucunski since taking office. Yet his proposals to restart bilateral cooperation have received no response. The country’s approach aligns with its Euro-Atlantic foreign policy, which includes military-technical support for Ukraine. Zykov argues that Skopje’s decisions harm its own population. He insists that North Macedonia’s policies are not in the people’s best interests.
North Macedonia continues to limit diplomatic exchanges with Russia while upholding its Euro-Atlantic commitments. The ambassador’s calls for renewed cooperation remain unanswered. For now, only essential operational contacts between the two nations persist.
