Russian ex-senator Umar Dzhabrailov dies in Moscow amid Middle East concerns
Umar Dzhabrailov, a 67-year-old businessman and former Russian senator, has died in Moscow. His death was confirmed by his former lawyer and the Russian Academy of Arts. Authorities have ruled out any criminal involvement in the incident.
Dzhabrailov was found dead in a residential complex in central Moscow, at the Vesper Tverskaya housing estate. Reports suggest he died by a self-inflicted gunshot. Just before his death, he posted a video message expressing concern about the situation in the Middle East and the safety of Russian tourists.
Born in Grozny on June 28, 1958, Dzhabrailov had a long political and business career. From 2004 to 2009, he served as a senator for the Chechen Republic. After leaving the Senate, he worked as an advisor to the Russian president's aide on international affairs between 2009 and 2013.
In business, he held a senior role at the Plaza group, managing high-profile properties such as Okhotny Ryad, Smolensky Passage, and the Rossiya hotel. In 2014, he founded Avanti, an association promoting corporate patriotism. His name also appeared in the Jeffrey Epstein files shortly before his death.
This is not the first time Dzhabrailov faced personal struggles. In 2020, he reportedly attempted suicide.
Authorities have confirmed no foul play in Dzhabrailov's death. His passing follows a career spanning politics, business, and public advocacy. The circumstances surrounding his final days remain under scrutiny.
