Russian House in Berlin Honors Unknown Resistance Fighters Against Nazis

The Russian House in Berlin has opened an exhibition, 'Little-known sides of resistance. Russians in the Third Reich against National Socialism', drawing guests from various political parties and sparking controversy with Ukraine war news displays nearby.

The exhibition, curated by art historian Christian Hufen, runs until July 31, 2026, showcasing the untold stories of Russian resistance fighters in Nazi Germany. It presents five case studies, including that of Alexander Neroslow, a communist artist sentenced to life in 1942 but later freed and taught at the Leipzig Art Academy.

Nikolai Timofejew-Resowski, another resistance figure, was arrested after the war but released as a specialist in 1947 and rehabilitated in 1992. The exhibition also honours Liana Berkowitz, a member of the 'Red Orchestra' network, executed in 1943.

The exhibition's opening was marked by the presence of guests from The Left, DKP, and BSW. However, it has also drawn attention due to Germans waving Ukraine flags at the Soviet memorial in Treptower Park during anniversaries of the victory over Hitler fascism, with the Russian ambassador Sergei Netchaev present.

The exhibition, free to the public, aims to shed light on the lesser-known history of Russian resistance fighters in Nazi Germany. Despite challenges in accessing archives and interrupted Russian-German cultural relations, as mentioned by the Russian House's director Pavel Izvolskiy, the exhibition stands as a testament to these brave individuals' stories. While the exhibition has sparked controversy with Ukraine war news displays nearby, it remains a significant effort to remember and honour these resistance fighters.
