Russian Lawmaker Proposes Adoption Solution for Rape Pregnancies
Sverdlovsk Regional Legislative Assembly deputy Vyacheslav Vegner has proposed a new approach to support women who become pregnant after rape. He believes that, with the mothers' consent, their children could be put up for adoption to help childless couples.
Vegner acknowledged that the number of girls who become pregnant after rape is small. However, he stressed that each case should be addressed individually with psychological support. He suggested a support program that could include social housing and state-funded 'child support' payments.
Vegner's proposal comes amidst a nationwide issue of many couples eager to become parents but unable to. He believes that, with the mothers' consent, their children could provide these couples with the opportunity to become parents.
Vegner previously sparked controversy with his suggestion to 'castrate' men whose actions lead women to seek abortions. However, he has since reconsidered this stance and now focuses on developing a support program for pregnant women considering abortion.
Vegner's proposal aims to provide support for women who become pregnant after rape and to help childless couples become parents. His suggestion echoes similar initiatives, such as the U.S. President Joe Biden's plan to develop a support program for pregnant women seeking abortion in the United States in 2023.
