Russian Man Gets 18 Years for Brutal Family Murders Over House Dispute

Roman Tkachenko has been sentenced to 18 years in a maximum-security penal colony for the murders of his grandmother and stepbrother. The killings followed a dispute over the sale of a house, with prosecutors originally pushing for a 20-year term. The court heard that Tkachenko fatally stabbed both victims in a violent outburst. During the attack, he shouted incoherent phrases, including words like ‘abortion’, ‘I hate’, ‘devil’ and ‘devilry’. His defence team argued that he acted in a state of sudden, intense emotional distress.

Lawyers for Tkachenko have since lodged an appeal against the conviction. A date for the hearing has not yet been confirmed.

The case centres on a family conflict that turned deadly. Tkachenko’s appeal will determine whether the 18-year sentence stands. The court’s decision remains in effect until the appeal is heard.
