Russian official turns boys’ Eternal Flame blunder into a wartime history lesson
Two young boys from Ust-Labinsk recently faced criticism after cooking food over the Eternal Flame, a war memorial. Alexander Rudenko, Deputy Governor of Krasnodar Territory, met with the children to discuss the incident. He later called for understanding, stating their actions stemmed from ignorance rather than malice.
The boys, pupils at School No. 1 in Ust-Labinsk, had little knowledge of the Eternal Flame’s significance. Rudenko stressed that harsh judgement was unnecessary and urged the public to avoid vilifying them. Instead, he arranged for their entire class to visit Novorossiysk, where they would learn about the Great Patriotic War.
The incident ended with a class trip focused on wartime history and remembrance. Rudenko’s approach aimed to educate rather than punish, ensuring the boys understood the weight of their actions. The excursion marked the conclusion of the matter, with no further public criticism encouraged.
