Russian Tourists Refuse to Leave Damaged Cuban Hotel After Hurricane Melissa
Over 20 Russian tourists have insisted on staying at the damaged Brisas Guardalavaca hotel in Cuba, despite severe hurricane damage. The hotel, operated by Gran Caribe, was hit by Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm, last week. The storm left the hotel's facade damaged, palm trees uprooted, and debris scattered across the pool and beach. Despite these conditions, a group of around 20 Russian tourists refused to relocate and demanded to stay in the damaged hotel. Tour packages to the hotel typically cost up to 200,000 rubles for a 10-day stay for two. Most of the Russian tourists, however, agreed to relocate to hotels in Varadero, over 700 kilometers away from the damaged hotel. The tourist company, Gran Caribe, has been working to accommodate the remaining tourists in alternative locations. The situation at the Brisas Guardalavaca hotel remains under review as the company works to ensure the safety and comfort of all its guests. The exact number of tourists who have agreed to relocate is not yet confirmed.
