Russian Woman Gets Probation for Selling Fake Gold Bars in $200K Scam
A woman in Russia's Magadan Region has received a three-year probation sentence for her role in a large-scale fraud involving counterfeit gold bars. The scam, which included a law enforcement officer, led to financial losses totalling 18 million rubles. The fake bars were crafted from copper and tungsten, coated with a thin layer of real gold.
The fraud came to light after the defendant sold nearly 2.5 kg bars disguised as pure gold. Each bar contained only a surface layer of gold, hiding a core of cheaper metals. The buyer, unaware of the deception, later faced his own legal consequences for attempting to illegally resell what he believed were genuine precious metals.
In March 2026, authorities confirmed that nine people, including the 30-year-old woman, had been arrested in connection with the scheme. The Susuman District Court's ruling against her has not yet taken legal effect, as investigations into her accomplices remain ongoing. During the trial, the defendant admitted guilt and was ordered to repay the full amount of damages. Meanwhile, the buyer of the fake gold was separately sentenced to three years of compulsory labour for his involvement in the illegal sale attempt.
The case highlights the risks of counterfeit precious metals in the region. The defendant's probation sentence includes full financial restitution, while her accomplices await further legal proceedings. The buyer's conviction for illegal trading adds another layer to the ongoing fallout from the fraud.
