Russian workers jailed for stealing 28 tons of fuel in $16,500 fraud scheme

A criminal scheme to steal fuel from a machinery plant in Arzamas has resulted in prison sentences and financial restitution. Between June and September 2022, ten employees worked together to embezzle nearly 28 metric tons of fuel. The total financial loss reached around 1.5 million rubles (approximately $16,500).

The fraud involved falsifying odometer readings on plant vehicles. By manipulating the records, the group created a false surplus of fuel, which they then sold for personal gain. Those involved included fuel station operators and equipment drivers, all of whom played a role in the operation.

The mastermind behind the scheme received a three-year prison sentence. The remaining defendants were given suspended terms. Before sentencing, the full amount of the financial loss was reimbursed to the affected enterprise. This case follows another recent conviction in the Nizhny Novgorod region, where workers were found guilty of stealing metal from a different plant.

The plant has recovered the entire sum lost in the fuel theft. Those convicted now face legal consequences, with the ringleader serving time in prison. The case highlights ongoing efforts to combat workplace fraud in the region.
