Russia's Aviation Struggles Amid Time Pressure
In the past few days, several airports in Russia have experienced temporary suspensions of flight operations due to external interference, primarily drone threats and strong winds. The affected airports include Ivanovo, Kaluga, Pskov, St. Petersburg (Pulkovo), and Tambov, where flight services were halted starting from the night of July 5, 2025.
The Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsiya) has confirmed that these airports have since resumed normal functioning, handling inbound and outbound flights as of the latest reports. Rosaviatsiya reiterates the priority of flight safety for all industry companies and continues to prioritize it despite the temporary restrictions.
The temporary suspensions have resulted in significant disruptions, with a total of 485 flights being canceled between July 5 and the morning of July 6. Additionally, 88 flights were diverted, and many passengers received hotel accommodations and meal vouchers as a result of these disruptions. Among the worst-affected airports were Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport, where 171 flights were canceled, and St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Airport, where 90 flights were canceled and 37 were delayed.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported intercepting 120 drones overnight between July 5 and 6, describing the events as external interference affecting airport operations. These incidents have forced authorities to impose temporary flight suspensions to ensure safety.
Despite the challenges, Rosaviatsiya has emphasized that Russia's aviation system continues to function stably and effectively under the temporary restrictions. The Ministry of Transport of Russia and Rosaviatsiya are closely monitoring the operation of air transport under these conditions. TASS, the news agency, has reported that airlines have sufficient resources to adapt to the current circumstances and that they are expected to do so, as emphasized by Rosaviatsiya.
In a telegram message, Rosaviatsiya communicated that the temporary restrictions have been imposed on Russia's aviation system due to external interference. The agency has also assured that it is taking necessary measures to ensure the stability and effectiveness of Russia's aviation system under the temporary restrictions.
