S-Bahn Berlin Boss Vows to Improve Reliability Despite Challenges

S-Bahn Berlin GmbH's managing director of production, Karsten Preißel, has expressed confidence that the S-Bahn system will overcome its current challenges. Despite a high number of operational failures, Preißel proposes a solution to improve reliability.

In the first nine months of 2025, over one in 20 S-Bahn trips failed to run due to operational issues. The system, under immense strain, faces persistent problems with signaling, safety technology, and train malfunctions. A series of malfunctions on the Stadtbahn line in the summer of 2025 caused significant disruptions, but measures have since been implemented to address the issue.

Preißel suggests reducing the number of trains on certain sections during peak hours to mitigate reliability problems. The S-Bahn's punctuality target of 96% has not been met since 2019, with current figures falling short. Delays in awarding contracts for new trains and operations are expected to push the arrival of the first new trains to 2031.

Preißel acknowledges the suffering of both passengers and S-Bahn staff due to reliability issues. Despite these challenges, he believes the S-Bahn system will improve, with proposed measures aimed at enhancing reliability and punctuality.
