Saab Establishes a Facility in Bremen - Mayor Bovenschulte Celebrates: 'Saab Steps Up as a Blessing for the Region'

Saab, a Swedish firm, inaugurates a new location in Bremen; Mayor Bovenschulte hails this development as a significant benefit for the region.

Swedish defence and security company, Saab Group, has expanded its global footprint by opening a new site for marine software system development in Bremen, Germany. The decision to establish a presence in Bremen reflects the city's strong economy and its diverse industrial and scientific environment.

The new site, which currently employs around 100 employees, is strategically located in a port city on the North Sea, offering proximity to major maritime trade routes and naval operations. This aligns with Saab's marine systems business needs, as Bremen is a major hub for shipping, shipbuilding, and marine technology in Germany.

The opening ceremony was attended by key figures from Saab and Bremen's government, including Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte, Anders Sjöberg (CEO of Saab Deutschland GmbH), and Rear Admiral Christoph Müller-Meinhardt. In his comments, Mayor Bovenschulte highlighted the changing security situation in Europe due to Russia's attack on Ukraine and other global crises, emphasising the importance of such investments in defence technology.

Saab's new Bremen site will focus on further developing the command and weapon control system "9LV". This system condenses data collected internally and externally on a ship into usable information, allowing operators to assess situations more quickly and efficiently and to act appropriately. Currently, 9LV CSM is already in use on around 250 ships worldwide and is considered one of the most powerful and flexible systems on the market.

In collaboration with the German Navy, the new Bremen site will contribute to the development of 9LV for four new German Navy frigates (Brandenburg class). This collaboration underscores Bremen's role as a hub for maritime technology and its significance in the defence industry.

Beyond its maritime economy, Bremen hosts a variety of industries, including artificial intelligence, land, water, air and space vehicle construction, and the security and defense industry. Saab finds an innovative industrial and scientific environment in Bremen, which is exquisite, according to the company. Bremen's network of entrepreneurial and scientific expertise is also a key factor that attracted Saab to the city.

The opening of the Bremen site by Saab is indicative of the city's strong economy, attracting companies like Saab. With its robust maritime industry, advanced technology and engineering talent, strategic location, and innovation and R&D infrastructure, Bremen offers an attractive location for companies seeking to establish a presence in the defence and marine technology sectors.

  1. Saab Group, expanding in the global defense and marine technology sectors, sees Bremen's port city location as a strategic advantage due to its proximity to major maritime trade routes, naval operations, and being a hub for shipping, shipbuilding, and marine technology in Germany.
  2. Recognizing Bremen's diverse industrial and scientific environment that encompasses defense technology, artificial intelligence, vehicle construction (land, water, air, and space), and security, Saab finds it an exquisite and innovative setting for their new site, aligning with the city's role as a hub for these industries.
