Saar-Landtag examines proposals of a citizens' council for the first time - Saarland Landtag Pioneers Citizen Engagement, Integrates Council's Climate Recommendations
The Saarland Landtag has made history by integrating recommendations from a Citizens' Council into its parliamentary work for the first time. Kira Braun (SPD) and Alwin Theobald (CDU) have pledged to review the report and communicate its feasible suggestions.
The Citizens' Council, comprising individuals aged 14 and above, convened six times and produced a 60-page document outlining recommendations on climate adaptation, buildings, energy, and mobility. The report on climate protection was forwarded to the parliamentary committee on the environment.
While Christoph Schaufert (AfD) expressed skepticism about the use of citizens' realities as a justification for a bureaucratic-ideological climate policy, Landtag President Heike Winzent (SPD) underscored the importance of the Landtag taking the recommendations seriously.
The Saarland Landtag has acknowledged the influence of a Citizens' Council in its parliamentary proceedings, marking a significant step in citizen engagement. The implementable recommendations are set to be scrutinized by Kira Braun (SPD) and Alwin Theobald (CDU).
