Sabah’s election heats up with record 74 independent candidates in the race

The candidate list for the 17th Sabah State Election has been revealed, featuring a mix of party-backed and independent hopefuls. Among the independents are Datuk Fairuz Renddan and Jordan Jude Ellron, both running for Pintasan, while Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Abdul Rahman Dahlan and others contest independently across various seats.

Fairuz, a former GRS Youth chief, is driven by personal integrity and commitment to Sabah's youth. He and Jordan, a former Star Youth chief, are contesting independently, joining 8 other independents in this election. This marks a significant increase from the previous election, with 74 independents now running, more than any other entity.

Reactions vary among political leaders. Fairuz's decision is guided by his desire to uphold the spirit of Sabah's youth. Meanwhile, Jordan expressed disappointment with Star president Jeffrey G. Kitingan, who 'pranked' him by dropping him from the Tulid seat list. Mohd Reduan Aklee and Abu Bakar Gapar accepted their parties' decisions not to field them in Tanjung Aru and Lamag, respectively, with composure.

The election scene in Sabah is heating up with a total of 74 independent candidates, the most in this election. GRS is fielding Johainizamshah Johari in the six-cornered fight for Lamag, while Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Abdul Rahman Dahlan declined BN's nomination to give way to new faces in Tempasuk.
