BSW Co-Chair: "No AfD Minister-President with BSW" - Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance in crisis as leadership clashes over AfD ties
The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) in Saxony-Anhalt has faced a major shake-up after much of its state executive board was removed at a special party conference. Internal disputes over strategy and potential coalitions with the far-right AfD triggered the leadership crisis.
The BSW was established in Saxony-Anhalt just a year ago and now counts around 600 members. However, tensions over how to handle the AfD and possible government roles have divided the party. While some members argue against immediately ruling out all cooperation, others insist on a firm stance against the far-right group.
Thomas Schulze, co-chair of the BSW in Saxony-Anhalt, joined the party specifically to block any coalition with the AfD. He has made it clear that no AfD candidate for state premier would gain BSW support. The party’s co-leaders have also firmly rejected any alliance with the AfD in the upcoming elections.
Despite the internal conflicts, the BSW has yet to name its own candidate for Minister President. The leadership struggles and disagreements over strategy have left the question of their nominee unresolved.
The BSW now faces a period of restructuring after the removal of key board members. With elections approaching, the party must resolve its internal divisions and clarify its position on potential coalitions. The outcome will shape its role in Saxony-Anhalt’s political future.
