Salzgitter's daycare renovation costs spiral €652,000 over budget
Renovation costs for the Ringelheim daycare centre in Salzgitter have soared far beyond the original budget. Initially estimated at €940,000, the project now requires €1.592 million. The city council recently debated how to handle the rising expenses but postponed a final decision.
The cost overruns first came under scrutiny during a November 2021 council resolution. At that time, officials stated the building's owner—not the city—should cover the additional expenses. However, as costs climbed, the council faced pressure to adjust the financing plan.
Green Party councillor Ralf Albert criticised the situation, warning that the rising costs were putting a strain on the city's budget. He suggested finding a compromise with the parish, which owns the building. Left Party councillor Hermann Fleischer raised concerns about whether the owner was contributing enough to offset the overruns.
During the latest meeting, CDU councillor Sabine Thiele urged immediate approval of the extra funding. She stressed the need to finish the project without further delays. Meanwhile, Lars Tietjen of the Greens/The Party proposed sending the proposal back to the factions for further review. The council ultimately backed Tietjen's motion, delaying a final vote on the funding adjustment.
The decision on covering the extra €652,000 has now been pushed back. The council will review the financing plan again before making a final call. Until then, the renovation remains in limbo, with no clear timeline for completion.
