Samsung heir Lee Ji-ho joins South Korea’s Navy as an officer this Friday
Lee Ji-ho, the son of Samsung Electronics Executive Chairman Lee Jae-yong, will be commissioned as a South Korean Navy officer this Friday. The ceremony will mark the appointment of 89 new officers in the Navy and Marine Corps, with Lee taking on the role of flag representative.
Born in the United States in 2000, Lee Ji-ho renounced his U.S. citizenship to join the South Korean military. He completed 11 weeks of rigorous training at the Korea Naval Academy in Changwon, South Gyeongsang. Following his commission, he will serve as an interpreter officer in the Navy.
The event will draw around 1,300 attendees, including Lee Jae-yong and Lee Ji-ho’s mother. The ceremony itself will feature a national salute, an awards presentation, the commissioning oath, and the pinning of rank insignia.
To mark the occasion, the Navy will deploy an Aegis-equipped Sejong the Great-class destroyer, a troopship, and a submarine.
Lee Ji-ho’s commissioning highlights his transition from civilian life to military service. His role as an interpreter officer will begin immediately after the ceremony. The event also underscores the Navy’s tradition of formal induction for new officers.
