San Francisco's Fleet Week: A Quieter Marina District Amidst Government Shutdown

San Francisco's Marina district experienced an unusual calm during this year's Fleet Week, with the Blue Angels airshow, a usual highlight, not taking place due to a government shutdown. Business owners in the area shared mixed experiences and hopes for future events.

JJ Sweidan, owner of Bonita Taqueria y Rotisserie near Marina Green, described the atmosphere as 'a little bit quieter' and 'not as crazy as usual' compared to previous Fleet Weeks. His restaurant, which typically sees a significant increase in customers during Fleet Week, did not experience the usual post-airshow rush on Sunday. For Sweidan, Fleet Week is usually the busiest weekend of the year.

Despite initial concerns, Dylan Fraioli, owner of La Fromagerie Cheese Shop, reported that her shop had plenty of foot traffic and did not experience a negative impact on sales. However, she had expressed concern about the potential impact of the shutdown on her business earlier.

Sweidan hopes that future Fleet Weeks are not affected by government shutdowns and that San Francisco considers scheduling changes to avoid such disruptions.

While the government shutdown led to a quieter Fleet Week in the Marina district, local businesses had varying experiences. Bonita Taqueria y Rotisserie saw reduced crowds, while La Fromagerie Cheese Shop maintained its usual foot traffic. Business owners look forward to future Fleet Weeks with hopes that they are not affected by similar disruptions.
