It is the beautiful view of the city. At the top there is the sky. There are so many houses and buildings one beside the other. At the bottom there are plants and sand.

Sandakan’s revival begins with Four Points Hotel reopening and 200 new jobs

Sandakan’s town centre is set for a revival with the reopening of the Four Points Hotel by Ormond Hotel. The project, backed by local leaders, aims to bring back the area’s former vibrancy and boost economic activity. Almost 200 new jobs for young people are expected as part of the plan.

Once nicknamed 'Little Hong Kong', Sandakan has seen a sharp decline in evening activity. Many traders now close by 6 pm, with some reporting a 70% drop in sales since the pandemic. Shop worker Norhanina Abdullah noted fewer tourists visiting Lorong Warisan in recent years.

The Four Points Hotel’s reopening marks a key step in Sandakan’s economic recovery. With nearly 200 jobs on offer and longer trading hours, the town aims to reclaim its lively reputation. Leaders hope the changes will bring back both locals and tourists after years of decline.
