Sanimed's dramatic comeback: From crisis to balanced budgets in 2025

Sanimed, a long-standing distributor of medical rehabilitation and care products, has turned its fortunes around after a difficult period. The company, founded in 1983, recently emerged from an 'existential crisis' in 2024/2025 to achieve a balanced budget for the first time in years. Its recovery follows a series of ownership changes and a strategic restructuring under Löwenstein Medical Group, which acquired the business in 2021.

Sanimed has operated in the homecare sector for over four decades, supplying essential products like wound care items, enteral nutrition, wheelchairs, and mobility scooters. Despite its market position, the company faced financial struggles until Löwenstein Group's takeover in 2021. Under new ownership, it expanded its distribution networks across Germany, Benelux, and Scandinavia, boosting its market share by 15% by 2025.

The restructuring efforts paid off, with Sanimed reporting a 12% annual revenue growth—outpacing competitors such as Mediq and B. Braun. This financial turnaround allowed the company to break even in 2025 after years of deficits. Now, with a stable foundation, Sanimed is planning further expansion. In 2026, construction will begin on a new 'future campus' in Ibbenbüren, Germany. The 16,000-square-meter site will include three floors of office space, a 4,500-square-meter logistics hub, and a flagship store. The project marks another step in the company's growth after decades of changing hands, including acquisitions by Hartmann Group in 2001 and Palero in 2020.

Sanimed's restructuring has secured its place among Europe's leading medical distributors. The new campus in Ibbenbüren will further strengthen its operations, combining logistics, administration, and retail under one roof. With a balanced budget and expanding market share, the company now looks ahead to sustained growth in the rehabilitation and care sector.
