SAS to Purchase 55 Embraer Aircraft for a Sum of $1 Billion - SAS to Pur chase 55 Embraer Aircraft Valued in Billions

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has announced a significant investment in 45 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, with purchase rights for an additional 10, marking a major step in the airline's fleet renewal for enhanced regional growth, efficiency, and sustainability. This is the largest direct jet order SAS has made from a manufacturer since 1996.

The new aircraft will primarily be used in the Nordic countries, with deliveries expected to begin in late 2027 and continue over approximately four years. The initial purchase is estimated to cost approximately $4 billion USD, excluding options.

The Embraer E195-E2, powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1900G GTF engines, offers a 29% improvement in fuel efficiency and a 62% reduction in noise footprint compared to previous generation aircraft. It can accommodate up to 146 passengers, depending on the seating configuration, and is compatible with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), currently approved for up to 50% SAF blends, with certification for 100% SAF in development.

SAS aims to use these jets to improve efficiency, reduce emissions, and expand its network connectivity from its Copenhagen hub across Scandinavia and Europe, providing more frequent flights with lower operational costs. The E195-E2’s size and range are well-suited to complement SAS’s current fleet and network strategy.

This investment comes after the financial difficulties brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to the restructuring of SAS, completed in August 2024. This is SAS's first significant investment in years, following the restructuring.

The Embraer E195-E2 aircraft will be the newest additions to SAS's fleet, which is a joint venture between Denmark, Sweden, and the airline Air France-KLM. The first of these new aircraft are expected to be delivered in 2027, with the initial delivery location set to be Copenhagen.

This investment is part of SAS's commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint. The E195-E2's fuel-efficient engines and compatibility with SAF make it an ideal choice for SAS as it looks to the future of aviation. The airline aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

The new Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, an investment by Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), will not only contribute to the airline industry's growth, but also finance the construction of a new airport in Copenhagen, as the grant of EUR 5 million is facilitated by this purchase. The aerospace industry, with its focus on efficiency, sustainability, and fuel-efficient engines, aligns perfectly with SAS's objectives for their fleet renewal.
