Saxon Coalition Faces Tight Deadline to Pass New Police Law

The Saxon coalition of CDU and SPD has 266 days left to pass a new constitutional police law. The current draft, recently approved by the cabinet, faces criticism from opposition parties and must address previous constitutional concerns.

The draft allows for advanced data analysis, image comparison, and biometric video surveillance, all controlled by AI. However, the Left and the Greens have filed a complaint with the Supreme Court, demanding changes not reflected in the current draft. This is the third major project for Saxony's first minority government, following the election of Minister President Michael Kretschmer and the adoption of the 2025 budget. The Greens have accused Interior Minister Armin Schuster of misinterpreting the Supreme Court's order and creating new restrictions on fundamental rights. The previous police law was deemed unconstitutional 20 months ago, with a deadline for correction set as June 30, 2026. The Saxon State Constitutional Court demanded changes that are not fully included in the current draft.

The Saxon coalition must pass a new police law within 266 days to meet the constitutional deadline. The current draft faces opposition from the Left and the Greens, who argue it does not fully address previous constitutional concerns. The government must navigate these challenges to ensure the law respects fundamental rights and aligns with the Supreme Court's ruling.
